The Best Time to Visit Kentuck Knob & Fallingwater

One of our monthly blog posts on what to see, do, or where to eat on Deep Creek Lake and Western Maryland.

Kentuck Knob and Fallingwater are two stunning examples of Frank Lloyd Wrights architecture

The famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed more than 1.000 homes during his 70-year architectural career, and two of his iconic structures are nestled in the mountains of Southern Pennsylvania: Kentuck Knob and Fallingwater. Although Frank Lloyd Wright was a controversial figure in his time, he is now recognized as a visionary pioneer of his era. His creations laid the foundation for American modernist architecture and continue to influence today’s architectural landscape considerably.

Visiting these two architectural gems during your stay at Deep Creek Lake is a fantastic day trip. Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob are only seven miles apart—so plan to hit them both on your outing. Autumn is a wonderful time to enjoy these historic homes—the striking designs stand out even more with vibrant fall foliage surrounding the structures. While Wright designed houses to blend into the surroundings using organic materials, the autumnal hues of the rustic landscape only enhance these unique properties and architectural lines.

Lake Pointe Inn, a luxurious Deep Creek lodging property, is a mere 50 miles from these two prominent examples of Frank Lloyd Wright’s enduring legacy. Even if you’re not a dedicated Wright fan, a scenic road trip to Kentuck Knob and Fallingwater in the fall is such a lovely outing. Especailly when you have our beautifully designed Arts and Crafts style Inn awaiting your return; with only 12 elegant rooms and suites at our Deep Creek lodging property, you’ll feel like you’re on a private retreat right on the lake. Bonus: a gourmet breakfast is included each morning of your stay! Start planning your next road trip and make your reservation today!

Visiting Fallingwater & Kentuck Knob During Your Stay

As a guest at our Deep Creek lodging property, you’ll be just under an hour’s scenic drive to Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. It’s the ultimate day trip, especially as the vibrant fall colors canvass the forests of the Southern Pennsylvania mountains. We’re always more than happy to suggest the best routes and stops along the way.

Here are the things to know about visiting Kentuck Knob and Fallingwater before you go:

First Stop: Kentuck Knob

  1. Kentuck Knob is a picturesque house that sits just below the top of a hill, overlooking the majestic Youghiogheny River Gorge and Laurel Highlands. The architecture of this house blends perfectly with its breathtaking surroundings, one of the many brilliant features of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Houses. The expansive glass windows, cantilevered overhangs, and open floor plan create a feeling of harmony between the house and its environment.
  2. The tour guides at Kentuck Knob will lead you on an educational tour of the Hagan family’s history, Frank Lloyd Wright, and the architect’s exquisite house. The expert guides will provide captivating anecdotes, historical tidbits, and exclusive insights into this fantastic home.
  3. Daily tours are offered from March to November, with weekend-only tours in December, weather depending. You’ll want to book tickets in advance, and these passes also include the grounds, where you’ll find nature paths dotted with outdoor art installations.

Next Up: Fallingwater House

    1. About 15 minutes further north of Kentuck Knob is another stunning example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs, Fallingwater. This is, perhaps, one of his most famous houses still standing, apart from his sensational Taliesin, and is considered one of the greatest architectural triumphs of the 20th century.
    2. There are a few different options for touring Fallingwater. Some prefer the self-guided style option, while some may enjoy a hosted tour that gives in-depth history and descriptions of the building. For an extraordinary event, choose one of the private tour options like the Sunset Dinner Tour, where your expert guide will leisurely take you on an in-depth exploration of Fallingwater and its grounds. This is followed by a three-course dinner prepared by Fallingwater’s private chef.
    3. Fallingwater is also surrounded by 5,100 acres of the Bear Run Nature Reserve. There are miles of hiking trails through mature Hemlock forests, streams, and native plant life species. Exploring these trails in the fall colors is such a lovely way to stretch your legs before heading back to our Deep Creek lodging property.

There are a few other places along the way to stop for lunch, shopping, or a wine tasting. Check out Christian W. Klay Winery or pop by Deep Creek Cellars in Friendsville, MD. Finish your day at Mountain State Brewing with delicious pizza and freshly brewed local beers. After exploring Fallingwater House or Kentuck Knob, antique enthusiasts can head over to downtown Uniontown, PA, where they can browse through a charming selection of local antique shops.
