Whether you’re looking for a peaceful woodland walk, a challenging climb, or a scenic lakeside stroll, Garrett County has it all. The trails in this area offer everything from short, easy loops to longer backcountry adventures. One of our favorite recommendations is the Swallow Falls Canyon Trail, of course, located at the iconic Swallow Falls State Park, home to one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls in Maryland, and it’s a pretty beautiful site in the spring as the snow melt feeds the Youghiogheny River.
The Swallow Falls Canyon Trail is one of the most popular trails in this beautiful Maryland State Park. It is a 1.8-mile loop known for its stunning waterfalls, old-growth forest, and scenic beauty. Hikers follow a well-marked path along the Youghiogheny River, passing highlights like Muddy Creek Falls—the highest waterfall in Maryland at 53 feet—and Tolliver Falls, a quieter, more secluded cascade. The trail is considered easy to moderate and accessible for most hiking levels, offering a perfect mix of lush woods, river views, and photo-worthy stops.
