The Best Hiking in the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area

One of our monthly blog posts on what to see, do, or where to eat on Deep Creek Lake and Western Maryland.

Dolly Sods Wilderness Area

The Allegheny Mountains, a range in the Appalachians, offer some of the most beautiful and untouched natural areas in Pennsylvania, Western Maryland, and Eastern West Virginia. One of the notable stops is the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area in the Monongahela National Forest for stunning outlooks, fantastic and challenging hikes, and sweeping views from the high-altitude plateau (the highest east of the Mississippi River), also known as Dolly Sods.

While this nature area is about an hour plus in West Virginia from our hotel on Deep Creek Lake, if you’re an avid hiker and wilderness lover, you’ll want to make the incredibly scenic drive to the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area. Depending on the direction you’re coming from, you could make this a stop along your way into the McHenry area. The most popular day hike here is the Rocky Ridge Trail which includes some of the most beautiful views from this exposed ridgline.

After you’ve worked those muscles climbing the scenic vistas at Dolly Sods, you’ll be ready as ever to return to the comfort of our hotel on Deep Creek Lake. Our luxurious Inn on the shores of the lake offers the perfect respite. Spend your evening by the river rock fireplace in our shared living room with a glass of wine or in the privacy of your own guest suite soaking in a jacuzzi tub. You’ll be fully refreshed and ready to take on another exciting day of adventure! Book your lodging today!
