Things to Do in Deep Creek Lake in 2014

One of our monthly blog posts on what to see, do, or where to eat on Deep Creek Lake and Western Maryland.

During your stay at Lake Pointe Inn, you’ll find no shortage of things to do in Deep Creek Lake and the surrounding areas.  While Wisp Resort is famous for skiing and winter sports, Deep Creek Lake is an exciting destination year-round. To make planning your trip easier, we’ve put together a list of things to do in Deep Creek Lake in 2014.

Boating, Fishing & Water Sports

Naturally, the biggest attraction for visitors to Deep Creek Lake is the lake itself.  During warmer months we take our pontoon boat out for an afternoon ride with guests.  The inn also provides guests with canoes and kayaks for exploring the lake. Boat and jet-ski rentals are also popular for visitors who want to travel around the lake.  And thrill-seekers will be pleased to find that during summer months two of the most popular things to do in Deep Creek Lake are waterskiing and wake boarding.

Hiking, Biking & Exploring

Deep Creek Lake State park is the ideal location to get back in touch with nature.  The park’s many hiking and biking trails will allow you to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty around you.  The park is also home to Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center, where visitors of all ages can learn more about the lake’s eco system through interactive exhibits. Whitewater Rafting, Canoeing, Rock Climbing, Rapelling & Geocaching

If you’re looking to get a little bit adventurous, then the nearby Adventure Sports Center International is the perfect place to spend your day.  The center offers manmade rapids for whitewater rafting, kayaking and riverboarding.  They also have programs in hiking, biking, rock climbing, rappelling and geocaching.

Skiing & Winter Sports

When there is a chill in the air, you can be sure there are skiers on the mountain. Wisp Resort offers skiing (downhill and cross-country), snowboarding, tubing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice skating during Winter months.  These winter activities are undoubtedly some of the most popular things to do in Deep Creek Lake.

Horse Drawn Carriages and Sleigh Rides

When you’re not hitting the slopes during the Winter, you can enjoy the seasonal magic of Deep Creek Lake with a horse drawn sleigh ride through Pleasant Valley.  And if there is no snow on the ground when you visit, you can try a carriage ride instead.

Other Attractions

  • Every Summer, the Garrett County Agricultural Fair brings an extra helping of fun to the area.  Featuring agricultural exhibits, carnival rides, scrumptious foods and the Farm Queen pageant, the fair is a great source of family fun. This year’s fair takes place July 26 – August 2, 2014
  • Two of legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterworks, Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, are located about an hour from Deep Creek Lake, which makes a great day trip. Both houses are closed during January and February and reopen in March.
  • Deep Creek Lake has dozens of great Art Galleries and Antique shops for those on the hunt for the perfect piece of art or vintage memorabilia.
